The case studies below are drawn from the 29-year career of TMG's principal, performed prior to founding TMG while employed by other firms. They show the depth of structural steel, welding, and NDT experience TMG brings to a project across Florida and the Southeast.
Client, owner, and project identities are withheld and details are abstracted. These are representative examples of the principal's individual professional experience — not a claim of past performance by The Metals Group, LLC, which was founded in 2026.
Transportation / Movable Bridge
Ultrasonic testing of bascule-bridge bearing assemblies
South Florida
Challenge
A double-leaf trunnion bascule bridge required ultrasonic examination of the bearing mounting bolts and studs that carry the moving span. Access was elevated and the components were in service, so the work had to be planned around limited closures.
Scope performed
Performed shear-wave and longitudinal ultrasonic testing of the bearing mounting bolts and studs, with ASNT Level III oversight and technical review of the data. Each indication was evaluated against the controlling acceptance criteria and documented with location callouts.
Codes and standards
- AWS D1.1 — Structural Welding Code – Steel
- ASNT SNT-TC-1A
Outcome
The examination results and Level III review were delivered as a documented report the owner could act on for maintenance planning, with findings limited to the components examined.
Transportation / Bridge Repair
NDT of an impact-damaged steel box girder
Central Florida
Challenge
A steel box girder over an interstate sustained impact damage and required nondestructive examination to support a repair design — including verification that crack-arrest holes had been correctly placed before repair welding proceeded.
Scope performed
Performed magnetic particle and ultrasonic testing of the damaged region, verified crack-arrest hole placement, and provided confirming examination after the repair welds were completed. The work was observed against the bridge welding code and the repair documents.
Codes and standards
- AWS D1.5 — Bridge Welding Code
Outcome
Pre-repair and post-repair NDT records were provided to the engineer of record, documenting the condition of the examined welds at each stage of the repair.
Institutional / Structural Steel
Special inspection and NDT of institutional structural steel
Southeastern United States
Challenge
A large institutional facility involved multiple special-inspection disciplines on an active construction schedule — earthwork through structural steel and sprayed fire-resistive material — with shop fabrication occurring off site.
Scope performed
Provided special inspection and nondestructive testing of the structural steel, including shop fabrication inspection, field welding and high-strength bolting inspection, and coordination of inspection timing with the contractor schedule. Findings were issued as code-anchored reports with photo documentation.
Codes and standards
- International Building Code (IBC), Chapter 17
- AWS D1.1 — Structural Welding Code – Steel
- RCSC Specification for Structural Joints Using High-Strength Bolts
Outcome
The inspection record supported the project special-inspection file for permitting and closeout, with each report limited to the work observed on the date of inspection.
Amusement / Ride Structures
Weld NDT of amusement-ride structures
Southeastern United States
Challenge
Amusement-ride structures carry cyclic loads and require periodic nondestructive examination of critical welds and components to support the operator’s maintenance and inspection program.
Scope performed
Performed visual and magnetic particle testing of critical welds and connections on ride structures and components, with ultrasonic examination where section thickness required it. Findings were documented per component with photo evidence.
Codes and standards
- AWS D1.1 — Structural Welding Code – Steel
- ASNT SNT-TC-1A
Outcome
NDT records were delivered to support the operator’s maintenance program, with findings limited to the components examined on the date of inspection.
